Magazine Editor

Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker school with campuses in Bethesda, Maryland, and Washington, DC, seeks a magazine editor for the Office of Communications. As the editor of the Sidwell Friends Magazine, he/she is responsible for the writing, editing, and production of the magazine and other publications (print and electronic). The magazine editor maintains the School’s writing style and ensures the stylistic consistency of all School digital and print materials.

He/she conceptualizes news and story ideas for Sidwell Friends Magazine and the news section of the website; works with and interviews alumni, faculty, students, and other community members for feature stories and columns; and establishes editorial and production policies and procedures. The magazine editor must exercise excellent judgement in terms of developing key storylines that advance the School’s mission, demonstrating strong journalistic integrity with the ability to meet deadlines. He/she must be detail-oriented and work collaboratively with other creative professionals including designers, printers, writers and photographers in order to produce well-executed publications.

This position reports directly to the Chief Communications Officer and closely collaborates with other members of the Communications staff, as well as with colleagues in Admissions, School Advancement, and elsewhere within the School community. The successful candidate will act as a primary proofreader for the office and serve as deputy to the Chief Communications Officer, assuming responsibility for office operations in the absence of the CCO. The position is located on the School’s DC campus.
 
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required (master’s preferred) with 7-10 years of senior-level experience in writing, editing, and production for print and digital publications. Special consideration will be given to experience in education or with non-profits. Basic photography skills and knowledge of design and layout principles are also necessary, as are a sense of humor, a commitment to excellence, the ability to meet deadlines, and an appreciation for the Quaker values underlying the School.
