Second Grade Classroom Teacher

Department: Lower School
Location: Bethesda, MD
Position Start Date: 2022/2023 School Year
Status: Full-Time

Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks to find a full-time classroom teacher for our 2nd grade classroom for the 2022-23 school year. This individual would join a team of 3 other 2nd grade teachers and would lead a classroom of 16 students.

The Lower School program seeks to foster a love of learning and provide children with a firm grounding in the core academic subjects (reading, writing, social studies and math). It is built around rigorous intellectual exploration and joyful discovery. Students are challenged to think deeply about concepts and ideas, to make learning personal and relevant, to ask questions and to look for broader truths and understanding.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,”  strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in best practices. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, and strong communication skills are essential characteristics of the candidate.

Additional responsibilities for all full-time teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress, providing opportunities for parent education, supporting admissions work, and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, duties, and school events. Our community is a collaborative environment, and lead teachers plan with their co-teacher (and other colleagues) to deliver an innovative, thoughtful program. Familiarity with research-based and equity-based practices in literacy and math and Responsive Classroom is an asset.

A BA degree in Elementary Education (or comparable degree) is required; advanced degrees preferred, along with a minimum of 3 years of successful elementary teaching experience.

Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based; therefore, this position requires teaching in person. This position begins in August 2022.

As a condition of employment, all employees who are employed with the school are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and able to provide proof of such vaccination. To make application for a medical or religious exemption, please contact the human resources department.

Interested candidates should upload a resume, cover letter, statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three references via our online application.
