PK Co-Teaching Classroom Teacher

Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks to find a full-time classroom teacher for our PK classroom for the 2022-23 school year. It is a co-teaching position, and the successful candidate will join a co-teacher and 20 PKers.

The PK program is a play-based, Reggio-inspired program, and the Lower School encourages its youngest learners to explore their worlds with growing independence, ask big questions, connect with their “inner teacher” and connect with our Quaker testimonies. The program builds self-knowledge, self-regulation, empathy, problem-solving skills, and a joyful approach to learning. As the teachers say, “they may be little on the outside, but they are big on the inside” The PK curriculum is flexible, with projects emerging from the needs and interests of each particular cohort of learners, and highly structured around well-defined routines and expectations. Learning experiences include dramatic play, painting, drawing, and building. Teachers act as coaches and facilitators, helping each child learn and grow. Outdoor learning and play are vibrant parts of the PK program. 

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,”  strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, experience in early childhood and a strong grounding in best practices. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, flexibility, a sense of humor and strong communication skills are important characteristics for this position.

Additional responsibilities for all full-time teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress, providing opportunities for parent education, supporting admissions work, and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, duties, and school events. Our community is a collaborative environment, and lead teachers plan with their co-teacher (and other colleagues) to deliver an innovative, thoughtful program. Familiarity with approaches like Project Zero and Understanding by Design are assets.

A BA degree in Early Childhood Education (or comparable degree) is required; advanced degrees preferred, along with a minimum of 3 years of successful early childhood or elementary teaching experience.

Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based; therefore, this position requires teaching in person. This position begins in August 2022.
