Upper School (US) Dean of Students

Department: Upper School
Location: Washington, DC
Position Start Date: July 2024
Status: Full-Time

Sidwell Friends, a co-educational independent Quaker day school in Washington, DC, seeks a Dean of Students for its Upper School Division (grades 9-12). The Dean of Students works closely with the Principal on all matters relating to student life beyond the academic experience, including working with faculty/staff and students to strengthen community and build a culture of respect, integrity, and joy based on the School’s Quaker values. The Dean of Students is responsible for the advisory program, manages attendance, implements emergency protocols, and supervises and administers the student discipline program. The Dean of Students, in collaboration with other Upper School Administrators, oversees student orientation, student activities, and clubs. The Dean of Students also partners closely with the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs and the Athletic Director to coordinate and bridge the different aspects of the student experience. Other responsibilities include mentoring Student Government and the Honor Committee and assigning faculty duties.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability and the wisdom to maintain the delicate balance between having compassion for students while maintaining the School’s community values and standards. The ability to communicate effectively with all constituents (students, parents/guardians, faculty/staff), in both oral and written formats, is essential for this role. High emotional intelligence is required.

A master’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience as a classroom teacher and administrator are required. Independent school experience is preferred. An appreciation for the School’s commitment to academic and personal excellence, Quaker values, and the prizing of diversity and environmental stewardship is essential.

This position starts July 2024.

Interested candidates should submit a resume, a formal cover letter expressing interest in this particular position, an educational philosophy statement, and contact information for three references via our on-line application.
