LS Interim 3rd Grade Teacher (Fall Semester)

Department: Lower School
Location: Bethesda, MD
Position Start Date: Immediately
Status: Full-Time

Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks to find a classroom teacher to join one of our 3rd grade classrooms (with a co-teacher) for the fall semester (now until December 20). Currently, this is a 3 month position, covering an employee leave of absence, and we anticipate that that teacher will return in January. There is some chance that we extend the contract and would love a candidate to have some level of flexibility.

The successful candidate will join a co-teacher in one of our 3rd grade classrooms. The classroom has 23 students. The Lower School program at Sidwell Friends seeks to foster a love of learning and provide children with a firm grounding in the core academic subjects (reading, writing, social studies and math). It is built around rigorous intellectual exploration and joyful discovery. Students are challenged to think deeply about concepts and ideas, to make learning personal and relevant, to ask questions and to look for broader truths and understanding.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,” strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in best practices. In particular, we are looking for candidates with a strong background in language arts and math. Familiarity with programs like Words Their Way and Illustrative Math is a bonus. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, flexibility, a sense of humor and strong communication skills are important characteristics for this position.

Additional responsibilities for all full-time teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress, providing opportunities for parent education, supporting admissions work, and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, duties, and school events. Our community is a collaborative environment, and lead teachers plan with their co-teacher (and other colleagues) to deliver an innovative, thoughtful program.

A BA degree in Elementary Education (or comparable degree) is required; advanced degrees preferred, along with a minimum of 3 years of successful elementary teaching experience.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. The salary for the 12-week assignment can range from $18,391.68 to $37,741.14

To Apply

To be considered, qualified candidates must upload a cover letter, resume, statement of teaching philosophy, and three references through our online application system (ClearCo). To learn more about our school, please visit https://www.sidwell.edu.
