Location: Bethesda, MD
Position Start Date: 2025/2026 SY
Status: Full-Time

Sidwell Friends is seeking a PK-4th grade math specialist to oversee and steward mathematical learning across the lower school. The work is two-pronged: supporting our teachers in facilitating an engaging, meaningful, differentiated and aligned math curriculum and providing direct interventions/supports for students who need it.

The math specialist serves on two teams: the Student Support team that focuses on equitably supporting and challenging all our learners, and the academic team that focuses on high quality curriculum and instruction across the grades. The goal for the position is to foster a creative, playful, rigorous and differentiated approach to mathematics instruction so that we can live our mission of ensuring that “all students are capable of deep mathematical skill and understanding.” To achieve this work, the successful candidate will focus on:

  • Supporting teachers in the development of their own mathematical identity

  • Providing ongoing professional development for teachers that build capacity, competence, confidence and excitement about math teaching and learning

  • Building strong content knowledge and pedagogical practices at each grade level

  • Evaluating and refining curriculum, with an emphasis on differentiation and supporting all learners

  • Collaborating with teachers to unpack units of study and plan out learning based on student assessments, learning targets, etc.

  • Developing strong assessment practices and linking them to planning and differentiation

  • Supporting the refinement of curriculum to ensure we are meeting the 3 goals of: deep conceptual understanding, strong procedural knowledge and fluency/automaticity

  • Working with our student support team to provide additional supports/interventions for students who need it

  • Curating and organizing resources for teachers to provide them the tools they need to support students

  • Leading parent education to help families understand how to support their children

Candidates should demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,” a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in evidence-informed practices. Risk-taking, collaboration, leadership experience, a positive community spirit, flexibility, a sense of humor and strong communication skills are important characteristics for this position. Because this is a leadership position, a minimum of 10 years teaching/leading in elementary school is preferred, as is an advanced degree (Master’s) in teaching, curriculum development or elementary math.

Salary

  • Salary Range $61,942-$115,069. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
