In-House Substitute Teacher (LS)

Department: Lower School
Location: Bethesda, MD
Position Start Date: August 2025
Status: Full-Time

Sidwell Friends Lower School is seeking an in-house substitute teacher who would be embedded in the Lower School community with the goal of providing high quality, reliable coverage and support for our PK-4th grade students. The position is full time and reports to our Lower School Academic Dean.

An integral part of the Lower School team, the in-house substitute teacher would be the first substitute to fill any classroom assignments. In addition, they would be the point person for overseeing and coordinating the external daily substitute pool for the lower school. Responsibilities would include:

  • Daily subbing and duty coverage in classrooms
  • Coordinating and arranging external substitute coverage for both planned and unplanned absences (if/when the in-house substitute is not available).
  • Maintaining a healthy pool of external daily subs and coordinating with the LS Principal if/when we need to recruit additional substitutes.
  • Equitably arranging duty coverage (lunch/recess/waiting wall) when multiple teachers/staff are unable to do their regular duties
  • Facilitating communication between teachers and outside substitute teachers (collecting sub plans in advance, going over them with any external substitutes, etc.)
  • Communicating with the LS administrative team if/when performance issues arise with external subs
  • Working with the lower school administrative team to provide semi-annual trainings to the substitute pool around logistics, safety procedures and cultural expectations

Additional responsibilities for all teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress, and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, and duties.

On days when a daily sub is not needed in a particular classroom, the successful candidate would provide extra hands/supports to our lower school teachers, assisting with administrative work, pulling individual/small groups of students for differentiation, and/or covering duties to allow teachers planning time.

The Lower School program seeks to foster a love of learning and provide children with a firm grounding in the core academic subjects. It is built around rigorous intellectual exploration and joyful discovery. Students are challenged to think deeply about concepts and ideas, to make learning personal and relevant, to ask questions and to look for broader truths and understanding. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,” strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in best practices. Risk-taking, flexibility, collaboration, a positive community spirit, and strong communication skills are essential characteristics of the candidate.

A BA degree in Elementary Education (or a comparable degree) and previous teaching experience at an elementary school is preferred.
