Middle School Music Teacher

Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school located in NW Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Music teacher in its Middle School division beginning in the 2025-26 school year.

The responsibilities of the position would include teaching general music courses for 6th and 7th grade as well as 8th grade electives in composition and music production, rhythm and drumming, and/or choral performance. The teacher will also serve as an advisor for 7th and 8th graders.

In addition to classroom teaching, the Middle School Music Teacher will collaborate with the Arts department and support colleagues as they prepare students for various performances throughout the school year, including fall and spring concerts, special events, and the 8th grade promotion ceremony. As needed, the person in the role may be asked to assist and serve as accompanist to the Middle School choral ensemble (grades 5-8), which is led by another teacher.

The successful candidate must be a team player who has a genuine understanding of and appreciation for adolescents, thrives in a lively, fast-paced academic environment, and has a proven track record of exceptional Middle School classroom management. Candidates must have experience working with music composition software, comfort working with students at various levels of musical experience, and the ability to teach vocal music. In addition, candidates with experience in the Orff Schulwerk or Kodaly approaches and comfort teaching all aspects of general music, including xylophones, recorders, drumming, music literacy and listening, and folk dance/creative movement are preferred. Piano skills are highly preferred.

An undergraduate degree in Music, Music Education, or a related discipline, is required, a master’s preferred. This benefits eligible position begins in late August 2025.

Salary

  • Salary Range $62,096 – $136,496. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
